Robert "Bob" Powell Hodges
The Robert Powell Hodges Scholarship Fund was established to keep the memory of Robert Powell alive and to help the military veterans whom he so proudly served beside. Bob was born May 31, 1970 in Washington, D.C. He passed away February 4, 2021. During his brief years, Bob graduated from Myers Park High School and subsequently graduated from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., with a B.A. in history and sociology. He later earned a B.S. degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Bob taught school in Union County, NC, for most of his adult life after completion of his military service. He was a teacher at three high schools where he was beloved by faculty, staff, and mostly the students he served.
Bob made a positive difference in the world. A gentle giant of a man, he loved his family, his school, the kids he taught, and the military. Bob believed in volunteering his time and effort to help others. He was active as a Beta Club sponsor at Sun Valley, the largest Beta Club in North Carolina, where the club received several awards for its leadership and volunteer service.
Wherever Bob went, and whatever he did, he made the world a better place. He never knew all the people who loved and respected him. He impacted so many students over the years with his enthusiasm and his high expectations in the classroom.
